Category: Classes[7:00pm] Joyful Long Form
Description:
In this 8 week course (plus a show!), we'll learn various formats and skills to join scenes together into a larger piece, using Improvable's trademark light and cheerful approach. Experienced longformers will know that sometimes the extra rules and structures needed to make a successful longform piece can leave you feeling a bit 'in your head'. We'll let you in on how we keep the joy alive, and follow the fun without worrying too much about doing improv perfectly- if it's fun, you're doing something right! Lots of practice on skills like pulling material, scene painting, tags and other edits will leave you in great shape for jams, teams, and more shows and formats. This class is aimed at improvisers who have already taken a course or two, either with us or elsewhere. Longform experience isn't needed, but you should be comfortable playing scenes. The venue is wheelchair accessible, and most levels of physical fitness and ability can easily be accommodated. You'll also need good basic English skills, but please don't be worried if it's your second language. 8 Tuesdays from 7-930, starting September 19. There will be a show on Tuesday November 14 at the Nursery Theatre, Broadgate. Classes are held at the Nursery Training Centre, Capital House, Weston Street SE1 3QD. Email theimprovable@gmail.com with any questions Diversity Scholarships: Improvable are pleased to announce a new diversity scholarship program, designed to make sure everybody who wants to play has a chance to. Category: Classes[7:00pm] The Nursery 'Making a Show' Drop in class (London)
Description:
Longform improv is a big sprawling beast. From improvised genre pieces to sketch shows and classic forms like the Armando and Harold, it can be anything which isn’t explicitly directed by someone onstage. It is an infinitely rewarding and complex artform that is growing at an exponential rate in the UK. This drop in class delves into all of these lovely, complex, rich areas. “Everything is relevant, useful and fun!” Great longform means working with your team on a number of different levels – filling scene after scene with interesting, fully-realised characters that care about each other while simultaneously (& largely wordlessly) shaping and directing the flow and structure of the larger show. It’s about being writer and performer in the same moment, about playing as a team and making each other look good. “Brilliant stuff. Very useful for improv and for life. Five stars.” During these classes, you will explore a wide variety of techniques that can be used in any improvised show. These include: Working together as a team The importance of play Building a world – supporting from on and offstage Common structural techniques such as edits, tags and transitions* Applying these skills to classic improv forms such as the Armando and Harold *Don’t worry if this jargon means nothing to you. That’s what the course is for! This class is suitable for those who have done some improv before and are comfortable playing a scene without any game structure. If you are unsure if this class is the right level for you, email jules@thenurserytheatre.com with a summary of your experience.
