Description:
What is it? An afternoon of improvisation fun! Working on the skills at the heart of improvisation, such as listening, making offers and committing to your choices, each week you will go a little further into improvisation, meeting new people and working with different teachers. Every class is stand alone, so you can come along to one, or be there every week! Who is it for? The drop-in is a wide ability class, so everyone is welcome! It is ideal for people trying improvisation for the first time, or more experienced players who want to work on core skills. The atmosphere is accessible, fun and non-judgemental and you will find yourself doing things you never thought you could. What will I get out of it? Each week you will become more confident and relaxed onstage, taking more risks and feeling more creative and liberated. You will learn the attitudes and ideas that make improvisation work. You will also find these things translating into your everyday life. You will be more confident with people, more creative in your work and better able to respond to stress. What have previous students said? A great place to spend a fun Saturday afternoon with a great bunch of people and learn improv from some of the best teachers in the country. A very relaxed and non-judgemental atmosphere which allowed everyone to learn from each other. Lots of fun! You can secure your place by clicking here to book in advance online, or drop in on the day*. Class is capped at 14, and we cannot guarantee a place if you do not book in advance.

Category: Classes[7:00pm] The Nursery / The Maydays Beginners Improv Intensive
Description:
Complete beginners are welcome – you don’t need any previous improv or performing experience. This is the place to start your improv journey! Using games and exercises from fifteen years of putting on shows, our experienced teachers will introduce you to techniques, behaviours and habits of mind that will make you more confident in new situations and more resilient in challenging ones. Our Beginners Improv Course will make you a better listener and communicator at work and home, and build your creativity. After all, improvisation is for everyone, not just performers. We'll introduce you to key improv concepts including: How to let go of negative thought patterns and say ‘yes’ to what’s fun in the moment. How to create scenes and ideas from nothing. How to listen deeply and supportively. How to add to an idea in simple steps. A course across five evenings with a maximum group size of twelve participants, this is the ideal place to begin your improv journey. It gives a grounding in the core skills of improvisation that is experiential, challenging, and above all, hugely enjoyable.

Category: Classes[7:30pm] Summer Intensive: The Narrative Toolkit
Description:
Build your own narrative toolkit for longform improv About this Event Note: To attend this class, you must have completed the Nursery’s level 3 or equivalent training. If you wish to attend, please email classes@thenurserytheatre.com with a summary of your experience. You will be given a password that enables you to book. Build your Narrative Toolkit over 5 evenings in a row with the same teacher and group. Just like our courses but jam-packed into one week! This intensive runs every evening from Monday 10th August to Friday 14th August, 7pm-9.30pm. Taught by Jules Munns of The Maydays (‘Happily Never After’) and Impromptu Shakespeare, this course will introduce you to a range of tools, techniques and jigs to level up your improvised stories. Based on the core idea that narrative shows should not feel like a maths problem, but serve the scenes and players, this intensive will both bring out and hone your natural narrative instincts. It does not introduce a one-size-fits-all structure but concentrates on providing players with the skills they need to create stories that they care about, stories which retain all of the freewheeling joy of your first improv class, but feel complete and gratifying to play and watch. Skills taught include: Beginnings, middle and endings – how to create, satisfy and occasionally defy audience expectations The important moment – noticing patterns and how interruption can be the start of a story Premise – asking ‘what if’ to give you a clear core idea for your show A sense of place – how to use genre and specificity to give reality and detail to your setting Reaching the crisis – how to know what your character wants, but instead, give them what they need Worldview, morality, protagonists and antagonists – how to make your show about something that matters Landing the plane – how to make shows that resolve rather than just stop With a maximum of 12 attendees, the Narrative Toolkit is run by Jules Munns. Jules performs with the Maydays and Impromptu Shakespeare, as well as being one-half of Ten Thousand Million Love Stories. He has performed and taught across the world, from Finland to Pakistan, Malawi to Canada. He creates improv blogs and podcasts and performs online for the Nursery. Note: To attend this class, you must have completed the Nursery’s level 3 or equivalent training. If you wish to attend, please email classes@thenurserytheatre.com with a summary of your experience. You will be given a password that enables you to book.
