Description:
What is it? An afternoon of improvisation fun! Working on the skills at the heart of improvisation, such as listening, making offers and committing to your choices, each week you will go a little further into improvisation, meeting new people and working with different teachers. Every class is stand alone, so you can come along to one, or be there every week! Who is it for? The drop-in is a wide ability class, so everyone is welcome! It is ideal for people trying improvisation for the first time, or more experienced players who want to work on core skills. The atmosphere is accessible, fun and non-judgemental and you will find yourself doing things you never thought you could. What will I get out of it? Each week you will become more confident and relaxed onstage, taking more risks and feeling more creative and liberated. You will learn the attitudes and ideas that make improvisation work. You will also find these things translating into your everyday life. You will be more confident with people, more creative in your work and better able to respond to stress. What have previous students said? A great place to spend a fun Saturday afternoon with a great bunch of people and learn improv from some of the best teachers in the country. A very relaxed and non-judgemental atmosphere which allowed everyone to learn from each other. Lots of fun! You can secure your place by clicking here to book in advance online, or drop in on the day*. Class is capped at 14, and we cannot guarantee a place if you do not book in advance.

Category: Classes[7:00pm] The Nursery/Maydays Summer Intensive: The Deconstruction
Description:
Study the Deconstruction format in-depth 5 evenings in a row with the same teacher and group. Just like our courses but jam-packed into one week! The Deconstruction is a longform format that explores a recurring relationship-based scene through themes, commentary and the world in which it all takes place. It was developed by Del Close and The Family – a seminal improv group from Chicago that included the likes of Miles Stroth and Matt Besser. The form includes, detailed long scenes, thematic scenes, ‘game-y scenes, and short sharp scenes building to a crescendo – it really does have everything. A perfect format to stretch your improv skills in many different directions! Like most forms, the focus and way it is taught evolves over time, and so with this. We’ll be looking at a couple of variations, while honouring the form as a whole, and maybe even trying one of our own. Jenny Rowe trained at ACT Brighton and has regularly taught there, as well as Brighton ICT, and Chichester Festival Theatre LEAP programme. Her credits include dreamthinkspeak (Underground) and Brighton Fringe ’19 Best Play winner, Clean. She has toured with The Foundry Group, played in the Shakespeare’s Globe ‘Read Not Dead’ series and performed numerous Shakespeares at Brighton Open Air Theatre. She is an actor, voiceover artist, writer and teacher, having worked with the BAFTA-nominated Treason Show Productions and, among other street theatre, was a hula-hooping, crash-helmet-wearing starlet walkabout act for Twisted Dreams. As an improviser, she has toured with Fluxx, performs with Impromptu Shakespeare and The Concept, and plays two-person improv (Two Seats Four Cheeks) with Lloydie James Lloyd, when they’re in the same city. She has trained with Secondcity and Annoyance, teaches Improv for Creative Writing and is currently researching her next show. Her recent solo play in 2019, “Tiptree: No-one else’s damn secret but my own” was described by Fringereview as… ‘a fascinating biography well worth knowing, convincingly acted and eloquently written.

Category: Classes[7:30pm] Summer Intensive: Viewpoints
Description:
A 5-day improv intensive using the theatrical technique of Viewpoints About this Event Study the technique of Viewpoints in-depth 5 evenings in a row with the same teacher and group. Just like our courses but jam-packed into one week! This intensive runs every evening from Monday 17th August to Friday 21st August, 7 pm-9.30 pm. Viewpoints is a theatre-based vocabulary that can help take your improv skills to the next level. We’ll use our bodies and the space around us as the valuable tools they are, providing us with feedback and emotional depth. We’ll redefine our understanding of timing within a scene, use silence to its full effect, and say the things that really need to be said. Viewpoints will take your acting and improvised theatre skills to the next level, with no drama school required. Stephen Davidson is the Artistic Director of The Improvised Play, Improvable, QI: Queer Improv, Carmen: A gender-swapped Film Noir Fantasy, and of Zeal: The Pride Improv Festival. Stephen teaches improv through Improvable and the Nursery Theatre, with the Free London Improv Project, and Hoopla Improv. He has taught and performed all over the world.
