Making a one-person show About this Event Women’s workshops are an open and supportive creative space for women and non-binary people of all ages and experience levels. Each workshop is taught by a different teacher and focuses on a specific area of improvisation, and we have some exciting people lined up over the coming months! *Please note: We are using an inclusive definition of ‘woman’ and ‘female’ and we welcome trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people. As theatres navigate new regulations and learn how to stage socially distanced events, there couldn’t be a better moment to think about making your own one-person, portable, sellable show: whether it’s a play, a cabaret, improvised or scripted, it’s time to take control of your story. Writer and performer of 6 award-winning and critically acclaimed solo shows and 5 two-handers, Sarah-Louise Young, leads a two-hour online course on how to create work for the solo performer. The pitfalls and the practicalities of travelling light. Description:
EveryBody, Yeah: Movement For Improvisers About this Event Do you feel Zoom-dependent and over-reliant on witty lines? In EveryBody, Yeah, we will take it back to body basics. This class is suitable for improvisers of all levels, as either an introduction or a refresher to body work. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes (or be barefoot, if you have a mat or non-slippery floor) and make sure that you have enough space to extend your arms and legs, if possible. Also evaluate your space for tripping hazards. If you have questions about the content and accessibility of instruction, please email me at rita.suszek@gmail.com . Category: Classes[7:00pm] The Nursery 'Making a Show' Drop in class (London)
Description:
Longform improv is a big sprawling beast. From improvised genre pieces to sketch shows and classic forms like the Armando and Harold, it can be anything which isnt explicitly directed by someone onstage. It is an infinitely rewarding and complex artform that is growing at an exponential rate in the UK. This drop in class delves into all of these lovely, complex, rich areas. Everything is relevant, useful and fun! Great longform means working with your team on a number of different levels filling scene after scene with interesting, fully-realised characters that care about each other while simultaneously (& largely wordlessly) shaping and directing the flow and structure of the larger show. Its about being writer and performer in the same moment, about playing as a team and making each other look good. Brilliant stuff. Very useful for improv and for life. Five stars. During these classes, you will explore a wide variety of techniques that can be used in any improvised show. These include: Working together as a team The importance of play Building a world supporting from on and offstage Common structural techniques such as edits, tags and transitions* Applying these skills to classic improv forms such as the Armando and Harold *Dont worry if this jargon means nothing to you. Thats what the course is for! This class is suitable for those who have done some improv before and are comfortable playing a scene without any game structure. If you are unsure if this class is the right level for you, email jules@thenurserytheatre.com with a summary of your experience.
