Description:
Making a one-person show About this Event Women’s workshops are an open and supportive creative space for women and non-binary people of all ages and experience levels. These workshops run once a month, and they are stand-alone, so you can book one or come along every time. Each workshop is taught by a different teacher and focuses on a specific area of improvisation, and we have some exciting people lined up over the coming months! *Please note: We are using an inclusive definition of ‘woman’ and ‘female’ and we welcome trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people. This month is Going Solo – with Sarah-Louise Young Have you always wanted to make a one-person show but don’t know where to begin? Do you have a story to share but don’t know how best to tell it? As theatres navigate new regulations and learn how to stage socially distanced events, there couldn’t be a better moment to think about making your own one-person, portable, sellable show: whether it’s a play, a cabaret, improvised or scripted, it’s time to take control of your story. Writer and performer of 6 award-winning and critically acclaimed solo shows and 5 two-handers, Sarah-Louise Young, leads a two-hour online course on how to create work for the solo performer. From choosing your initial idea to picking your perfect collaborators, Sarah-Louise will guide participants through discussion and practical exercises, helping them explore the creative process. As well as working on the style, content and narrative elements of making your own work, she will share her experience and expertise on producing and promoting alone. The pitfalls and the practicalities of travelling light. Participants will be asked to complete a short pre-workshop questionnaire to enable Sarah-Louise to tailor the session to their needs as much as possible. If you already have an idea for a show she will help you find the next step in the creative journey and if you have never thought about going solo before, hopefully, you will leave inspired to start now. Category: ClassesOnline Elective: EveryBody, Yeah: Movement with Rita Suszek
Description:
EveryBody, Yeah: Movement For Improvisers About this Event Do you feel Zoom-dependent and over-reliant on witty lines? In EveryBody, Yeah, we will take it back to body basics. We will use a Grotowski-method inspired set of exercises, which will help breathe new life into your scenes, whether on screen or on stage! This class is suitable for improvisers of all levels, as either an introduction or a refresher to body work. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes (or be barefoot, if you have a mat or non-slippery floor) and make sure that you have enough space to extend your arms and legs, if possible. Also evaluate your space for tripping hazards. If you have questions about the content and accessibility of instruction, please email me at rita.suszek@gmail.com . This class is utilising Grotowski’s method as it applies to improvisers. We will use body and breath exercises and practice following our physical impulses, which will then translate into scene-work. We will also have fun with big and silly movements and boost our body awareness in a playful, accessible way! Price: £17.50+booking fee Rita Suszek is an improviser, comedian, actor and playwright. She has performed and led workshops in Queer Improv, as coached by Stephen Davidson and still performs as part of Neither, a twoprov ensemble formed with Roderick Millar. Rita has written and performed solo stand-up shows Fuck It, I’m Thirty and F*cking European (performed at Theatre Royal Stratford East), as well as writing a theatre play Five Dresses I Never Wear (part of which was performed as part of Calm Down Dear festival at Camden People’s Theatre). Recent credits include Kai and Crow in Snow Q, poetry play by Maria Jastrz?bska, directed by Mark Hewitt; improv credits include Machine For Fools, directed by Michael Such and Stephen Davidson, and Behind The Scenes At Studio Mandelbrot (Harry Turnbull, The Nursery Theatre). Min 4 participants, max 12.

Category: ClassesOnline Duos Improv Course
Description:
Duos – build that two-person relationship About this Event This Experienced course runs every Thursday from 3rd September to 8th October, 7.30 pm-9.30 pm BST/GMT+1 Experienced (18 months+) A class for skilful players, especially those who have finished improv training programmes at their school and are looking to widen their horizons. These classes will make the assumption that you are comfortable performing longform improvisation and will push you. Doing scenes with just one scene partner is common – doing a whole show with just one other person is less common. If you want to start doing a duo or work on the current duo you are part of, this course will help you create characters you can sit in for longer, call back on more often and will provide time for you to work on the unique aspects of two-person improv. If you already have a duo partner and want to enrol with them, we highly recommend that and time will be given for you to work most of your scene specifically with them so you can get notes as a duo. If you can’t enrol with your duo partner or are “two-prov curious” and want to work on the skills of two-person improv, that’s fine too. Make the most of your duo by investing time and energy in that relationship on this course. A supportive environment and a chance for you to work out what unique strengths you bring out in each other will not only help build great duos but have knock-on positive side effects for the rest of your improv too! Min 4 participants, max 12. Lloydie James Lloyd is an improviser from Nottingham who performs with The Maydays and also with Rhymes Against Humanity – the improvised musical in Nottingham. He performs and teaches around the world and is the host of The Improv Chronicle Podcast, a documentary podcast for improvisers. Lloydie trained at UCB (New York), iO and Annoyance Theatres (Chicago) and with as many improvisers he has been able to find that keep his nerd-like passion for this artwork alive. In his spare time, he sings, writes and collects nice hand lotions.
