Description:
Making a one-person show About this Event Women’s workshops are an open and supportive creative space for women and non-binary people of all ages and experience levels. These workshops run once a month, and they are stand-alone, so you can book one or come along every time. Each workshop is taught by a different teacher and focuses on a specific area of improvisation, and we have some exciting people lined up over the coming months! *Please note: We are using an inclusive definition of ‘woman’ and ‘female’ and we welcome trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people. This month is Going Solo – with Sarah-Louise Young Have you always wanted to make a one-person show but don’t know where to begin? Do you have a story to share but don’t know how best to tell it? As theatres navigate new regulations and learn how to stage socially distanced events, there couldn’t be a better moment to think about making your own one-person, portable, sellable show: whether it’s a play, a cabaret, improvised or scripted, it’s time to take control of your story. Writer and performer of 6 award-winning and critically acclaimed solo shows and 5 two-handers, Sarah-Louise Young, leads a two-hour online course on how to create work for the solo performer. From choosing your initial idea to picking your perfect collaborators, Sarah-Louise will guide participants through discussion and practical exercises, helping them explore the creative process. As well as working on the style, content and narrative elements of making your own work, she will share her experience and expertise on producing and promoting alone. The pitfalls and the practicalities of travelling light. Participants will be asked to complete a short pre-workshop questionnaire to enable Sarah-Louise to tailor the session to their needs as much as possible. Online Ten Styles of Scenes Improv Course
Description:
The fundamentals and joys of really great scene work About this Event This Intermediate course runs every Wednesday evening fro 10 weeks from 9th September to 11th November, 7.30 pm-9.30 pm. Intermediate (3/6 months+ regular improv) These classes will be opportunities to add tools to your growing toolbox. Normally these classes will expect players to be confident playing scenes. These classes will provide practice and specific new skills. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. In this new course, you will concentrate on the fundamentals and joys of really great scene work. No frills, no structures, just two people and (sometimes) a suggestion. Over ten weeks, Artistic Director Jules Munns will introduce you to ten styles of scene drawn from different improv traditions, You will look at how they are structured, what powers them and when they might be used. Treating this not as a set of restrictions, but as useful tools and shortcuts to shape your scenes, you will learn how to get the most out of your scene and therefore have the most fun. You will gain an understanding of how you like to play and what you can bring to a scene, as well as expanding your range and flexibility of play by learning how to combine different scene types. This course covers: “Let me tell you something” – Point of view scenes “I thought I was the only one” – Agreement scenes “You know what I like about you?” – Relationship scenes “Will you make me the happiest man?” – Genre/expectation scenes “Wait what?” – Platform/tilt scenes “If you will let me explain” – Frustration scenes “It is as the prophecy foretold!” – Protagonist scenes “Johnson, sit down” – Game/premise scenes “As I was saying” – Multi-part scenes “Everybody get in here” – Groups scenes With a maximum of 12 attendees, Ten Styles of Scenes is taught by Jules Munns. Jules performs with the Maydays and Impromptu Shakespeare, as well as being one-half of Ten Thousand Million Love Stories. He has performed and taught across the world, from Finland to Pakistan, Malawi to Canada. He creates improv blogs and podcasts and performs online for the Nursery.

Category: ClassesOnline Longform Level 1 Course
Description:
The Maydays and The Nursery are delighted to announce new six week courses focussing specifically on online improv. About this Event Building on a decade and a half of improv experience, The Maydays and The Nursery have been experimenting with online improv daily since the lockdown began and are now looking to share this knowledge. We are excited by the possibilities that the online space opens up and want to make work that is natively online, rather than a pale copy of the offline art form. These classes will be opportunities to both expand your improv skills and connect with people from across the world, to share a laugh in challenging circumstances and build a valuable new improv skill. Playing Longform Improv Online Designed for experienced players (with a minimum of eighteen months experience), these classes will examine how online longform is becoming its own art form. Players will learn to work with the technology and use the international nature of online improv to create something based in offline improv, but joyfully innovative. These courses will be based on our ongoing R&D into online improv and will examine: – Playing in different locations and styles, all with a fixed camera – Using theme, thesis and callbacks to create natural, unpressurised structure – Creating group games and scenes using, rather than ignoring the lag – Clearly and concisely editing, linking and returning to scenes These courses will run 6 weeks in an online zoom room – Please note our last class sold out in 24 hours so it’s best to book asap! About these classes: Classes will be conducted on Zoom. See below for our FAQ about improvising online. Classes are capped at 12 participants and will run strictly to time. All times are UK local FAQ HERE All sales are final

Category: ClassesOnline Duos Improv Course
Description:
Duos – build that two-person relationship About this Event This Experienced course runs every Thursday from 3rd September to 8th October, 7.30 pm-9.30 pm BST/GMT+1 Experienced (18 months+) A class for skilful players, especially those who have finished improv training programmes at their school and are looking to widen their horizons. These classes will make the assumption that you are comfortable performing longform improvisation and will push you. Doing scenes with just one scene partner is common – doing a whole show with just one other person is less common. If you want to start doing a duo or work on the current duo you are part of, this course will help you create characters you can sit in for longer, call back on more often and will provide time for you to work on the unique aspects of two-person improv. If you already have a duo partner and want to enrol with them, we highly recommend that and time will be given for you to work most of your scene specifically with them so you can get notes as a duo. If you can’t enrol with your duo partner or are “two-prov curious” and want to work on the skills of two-person improv, that’s fine too. Make the most of your duo by investing time and energy in that relationship on this course. A supportive environment and a chance for you to work out what unique strengths you bring out in each other will not only help build great duos but have knock-on positive side effects for the rest of your improv too! Min 4 participants, max 12. Lloydie James Lloyd is an improviser from Nottingham who performs with The Maydays and also with Rhymes Against Humanity – the improvised musical in Nottingham. He performs and teaches around the world and is the host of The Improv Chronicle Podcast, a documentary podcast for improvisers. Lloydie trained at UCB (New York), iO and Annoyance Theatres (Chicago) and with as many improvisers he has been able to find that keep his nerd-like passion for this artwork alive. In his spare time, he sings, writes and collects nice hand lotions.
