Category: ClassesOnline Summer Intensive: Improvised Character Toolkit
Description:
Generate compelling, believable and funny characters for use in any improv scenes! About this Event NB This course is open for anyone with some improv experience (eg a Level1/Beginners course or a few regular drop-ins). Study creating characters online in-depth 5 evenings in a row with the same teacher and group. Just like our courses but jam-packed into one week! This intensive runs every evening from Monday 24th August to Friday 28th August, 7 pm-9.30 pm. This course is specially adapted for the digital space, with lessons taken from actor training school and re-worked for the inventive improviser looking to broaden their choices. By the end of the week, you will have a simple toolkit at your disposal which can fast-track you to even greater playful instincts and supercharge any improv scene … Topics covered will be: · Crazy creatures, animals and inanimate objects- How to make them as relatable as they are silly. · Status- Keith Johnstone’s most lasting legacy in impro, learn how playing with status can better tell the story of a scene. · Accents, impressions & voices – Unlock the power of your voice to create surprising (often ridiculous) new choices for yourself and your scene partners. · The ‘Viewpoints’ system- As it relates to character, influenced by Anne Bogart. Find greater specificity in your choices onstage and onscreen with exercises that explore Gesture, physical architecture and Spatial Relationships. · We will also touch upon physicality, to the extent that the online medium allows. + There will be some homework in the form of a life study assignment, which will contribute towards the work in classes. Note: You will not be required to roll around on your hands and knees pretending to be a Weasel or a tree- but it might just happen anyway. This course is created by Jonah Fazel, an experienced character actor, theatre-maker and Television presenter who trained at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and the Webber Douglas Academy. He has trained in multiple improvisational styles and has been teaching improvisation for over a decade. In addition to being a guest lecturer at many UK drama schools, he is also a professor of improvisation and The University of Creative Arts. He can currently be seen as a series regular on BAFTA-winning online comedy ‘History Bombs’, the award-winning kids TV show ‘Treasure champs’ and touring the UK with the hit genre show Bumper Blyton: The Improvised Adventure SPEAKERS MAP COMMENTS RELATED EVENTS

Description:
Too old for improv? Not likely! About this Event Every Monday from 31st August to 5th October, 10am-12pm BST / GMT+1 This 6-week class is an opportunity to try improvised comedy and theatre, focusing on your experiences, needs and skills, as an older person. What do we mean by older people? That's up to you; you can, of course, do any of our courses, but if you fancy learning improv with your peers then this could be perfect for you. We'll teach the basics of improv comedy – collaboration, commitment, listening and supporting each other – in a gentle and fun way. You don't need any prior knowledge of improvisation or drama, and there's no pressure to be funny. But you will be. As the course progresses, you'll get better at thinking on your feet, making quick decisions, and the most important part of all: it doesn't matter if you don't get it right. Mistakes are opportunities to make something new and brilliant. FAQ I don't understand Zoom! No problem, we'll be in contact before the course starts to arrange a session to go through the basics. I can't come up with ideas quickly You don't have to – everyone learns at their own pace, and all you have to do is be you, listen and respond. Min 4 participants, max 12.

Description:
This Open workshop runs Monday 5th October, 7 - 9.30pm BST/GMT+1 Open - A class for anyone, regardless of their improv experience. Although more experienced players are of course welcome, the content does not require any prior improv knowledge. Playing Slow (without being boring) - Playing slow is more than improvising slowly. It requires an appreciation of the subtitles of human behavior. By leveraging the small shifts that occur from moment to moment we can turn a thirty second scene into a three minute scene.

Category: Classes[7:00pm] The Nursery/Maydays Online Improv Elective: Improvised Rap with Will Naameh
Description:
This open elective runs Monday 5th October 7 - 9.30pm BST Open - A class for anyone, regardless of their improv experience. Although more experienced players are of course welcome, the content does not require any prior improv knowledge. In this workshop we’ll cover the basic building blocks of improvised rap, how to find your flow, how to successfully rhyme and land punchlines in improvised songs, all while keeping things fun, stress-free, chill and relaxed. The session involves a lot of writing with pen and paper, and not a huge amount of standing up alone and rapping on the spot. The atmosphere is always very relaxed, fun and supportive! Rapping is one of the things improvisers find most terrifying – this workshop will show you how to turn that fear into freedom and fun.
