Description:
A Mellow Sunday Writing Class using improvisation as its starting point About this Event Every Sunday afternoon from 13th September to 18th October, 1pm-3.30pm In this class, we’ll use improv as a jumping-off point for your creative writing. An opportunity for you to make yourself turn up, improvise, and write EVERY week. Inspiration will come from your own, and other people’s improv, and you’ll come out with ideas and starting points to pursue in your own time. It’s a buffet of writing genres, styles and techniques! Each week, we’ll look at a different aspect of writing, using improvisation exercises and scenes to inspire and develop ideas. The exercises we do on zoom, may be familiar to you, but we’ll be using them in a different way – like magpies – stealing what works, what we like and discarding what we don’t. Areas covered on this course include: Basic story arc and structure Ways to begin and the editor in the head Creating and building character Science fiction & the Fantastic (extraordinary/ordinary) History & Biography Audience and Who’s Telling the Story? You don’t have to have knowledge of any of these subjects, just turn up, play, and get some words on paper. Any form of writing is fine: prose, poetry, or something performative. Toward the end of the course, you will also have the opportunity to send in a piece of writing for peer review (using constructive and positive guidelines), should you so choose. Who’s this for? Improvisers who write, or want to write, but need a butt-kick Who’s teaching it? Jenny Rowe (The Maydays / Impromptu Shakespeare)

7:00pm Category: Shows[7:00pm] Love Explosion! Free impro show
Description:
This improvisation show is free in every sense of the word and open to people of any experience, included non at all. We will be celebrating collective courage and love of the game in an open stage succession of improvised scenes with interlaced improvised music. The way it works: Everyone puts their name in the hat. The host pulls two names out. Those two people get up on stage. If they want, they can choose a suggestion offered by the audience or they can go dry. Lights go out. A Beat. Lights go up. The play begins, then unfolds through a series of offers and responses. Three minutes - lights out. Scene over. New names. New scene. And so on. You can speak. Or not. You can dance. Or not. You can make music. Or not. You can clown. Or not. The choices are ALL yours. Your duties: Accept all offers, respect your partner and make them look good; choose transformation over ego; contributing and letting go of control over outcomes. Your bill of rights: Freedom to flail. The world trains us to be so structured in our thinking that many people feel extremely uncomfortable and self-conscious in any situation that might remotely involve "flailing." And yet the creative mind revels in flailing, as long as we can stay with it long enough to have some fun. Freedom to fail. With the non-stop demand and competition of the Age of Complexity we are under constant pressure to perform. In feeling the freedom to fail, we learn to flow with it as part of the creative process. Freedom to Flop. To find a place in life where it is okay to look hapless, have a brain freeze and then just move on is an amazing thing. This is the closest we can get to full-on acceptance of our flawed self because it happens in front of a group of people who will applaud the effort. And who want your support when it happens to them. Freedom To Flounder. It feels natural to follow the familiar, and to go in new directions feels wrong, fearful, even shame-inducing. So we flounder in order to break things up. We learn to tolerate the discomfort through the group's acceptance. We discover the scene by being in it, just as we are. Just as we discover the gifts hidden within mistakes and missteps by accepting and mining them for meaning. The people who show up will remind you that showing up in life is a creative choice. They will be grateful for your openness and humanity. They will thank you for playing. Every second Friday of the month at the Sebright Arms. Your two minutes of love and fame.
