Time:
7:00pm - 10:00pm
Location:
The Nursery Training Centre, 88 Borough High Street, London Bridge
Description:
Longform improv is a big sprawling beast. From improvised genre pieces to sketch shows and classic forms like the Armando and Harold, it can be anything which isnt explicitly directed by someone onstage. It is an infinitely rewarding and complex artform that is growing at an exponential rate in the UK.
This drop in class delves into all of these lovely, complex, rich areas.
Everything is relevant, useful and fun!
Great longform means working with your team on a number of different levels filling scene after scene with interesting, fully-realised characters that care about each other while simultaneously (& largely wordlessly) shaping and directing the flow and structure of the larger show. Its about being writer and performer in the same moment, about playing as a team and making each other look good.
Brilliant stuff. Very useful for improv and for life. Five stars.
During these classes, you will explore a wide variety of techniques that can be used in any improvised show. These include:
Working together as a team
The importance of play
Building a world supporting from on and offstage
Common structural techniques such as edits, tags and transitions*
Applying these skills to classic improv forms such as the Armando and Harold
*Dont worry if this jargon means nothing to you. Thats what the course is for!
This class is suitable for those who have done some improv before and are comfortable playing a scene without any game structure. If you are unsure if this class is the right level for you, email jules@thenurserytheatre.com with a summary of your experience.

You create the characters - we kill them! A brand new murder mystery comedy is improvised at each show - with adventure, intrigue & romance thrown in along with audience interaction, short-form games & lots of surprises. Extremely surreal. It's the first Thursday of each month at a very cool venue, and it's 3 on the door. We'd love you to be there.

Description:
This improvisation show is free in every sense of the word and open to people of any experience, included non at all. We will be celebrating collective courage and love of the game in an open stage succession of improvised scenes with interlaced improvised music.
The way it works:
Everyone puts their name in the hat. The host pulls two names out. Those two people get up on stage. If they want, they can choose a suggestion offered by the audience or they can go dry. Lights go out. A Beat. Lights go up. The play begins, then unfolds through a series of offers and responses. Three minutes - lights out. Scene over. New names. New scene. And so on.
You can speak. Or not.
You can dance. Or not.
You can make music. Or not.
You can clown. Or not.
The choices are ALL yours.
Your duties:
Accept all offers, respect your partner and make them look good; choose transformation over ego; contributing and letting go of control over outcomes.
Your bill of rights:
Freedom to flail.
The world trains us to be so structured in our thinking that many people feel extremely uncomfortable and self-conscious in any situation that might remotely involve "flailing." And yet the creative mind revels in flailing, as long as we can stay with it long enough to have some fun.
Freedom to fail.
With the non-stop demand and competition of the Age of Complexity we are under constant pressure to perform. In feeling the freedom to fail, we learn to flow with it as part of the creative process.
Freedom to Flop.
To find a place in life where it is okay to look hapless, have a brain freeze and then just move on is an amazing thing. This is the closest we can get to full-on acceptance of our flawed self because it happens in front of a group of people who will applaud the effort. And who want your support when it happens to them.
Freedom To Flounder.
It feels natural to follow the familiar, and to go in new directions feels wrong, fearful, even shame-inducing. So we flounder in order to break things up. We learn to tolerate the discomfort through the group's acceptance. We discover the scene by being in it, just as we are. Just as we discover the gifts hidden within mistakes and missteps by accepting and mining them for meaning.
The people who show up will remind you that showing up in life is a creative choice. They will be grateful for your openness and humanity. They will thank you for playing.
Every second Friday of the month at the Sebright Arms. Your two minutes of love and fame.

Description:
In Level 3 of The Maydays advanced improvisation courses, you’ll have 8 weeks to explore what it means to improvise a play. We’ll consider the differences between a ‘theatre’ show and an improv show, how to get from the start to the finish, and we’ll look at the improv ‘rule’ book with a critical eye.
What does it mean to be ‘theatrical’? How do we know what’s coming next? Does a play have to be narrative? What can we learn from the likes of Brecht, Pinter, Naturalism, Expressionism, Theatre of the Absurd, Classical, Shakespeare, Eclectic or Contemporary playmakers (nb Don’t worry if this means nothing to you now!) You’ll be encouraged to research theatre styles before trying things out in workshops.
What can you expect?
Stagecraft – space on the stage and how to utilise it to make it – and us – mean something
Stealing creative ideas from scripted theatre shows
Emotional Intensity
Narrative – getting from the start to the finish
Status
Direct address and breaking the fourth wall
We’ll develop our improv toolkit before performing a show (or shows) that aim to look like scripted theatre. Emotionally connected scenes, relationships, conflict, serious and dramatic themes, sadness, delight, physicality and maybe even multimedia (music, lights, props etc).
Who is this course suitable for?
Adults ages 18-100
People who have enjoyed longform performance courses already
Any improviser who has already done a level 2 or 3 course
Performance showcase for family & friends at the Maydays Studio at 8 pm on 11th March 2019.

By day, this city's streets are bright and orderly. But by night, it is the playground of shysters and crooks, smugglers and thieves. The Mob is about to commit a crime so deadly, so devastating, that it will be down to the audience to tell them what it is
Hivemind are a quartet of comic improvisers, freshly graduated from Cambridge and tackling adulthood much like they tackle their stage shows: with charismatic cluelessness. This year, on the first Friday of every month, they will weave a gripping noir thriller out of thin air. The audience provide us with a crime to commit, and we improvise an hour-long crime saga rife with violence, shocking betrayals, and inadequate street lighting, hurtling towards a dramatic denouement that neither you nor we will see coming.

What is it?
An afternoon of improvisation fun! Working on the skills at the heart of improvisation, such as listening, making offers and committing to your choices, each week you will go a little further into improvisation, meeting new people and working with different teachers. Every class is stand alone, so you can come along to one, or be there every week!
Who is it for?
The drop-in is a wide ability class, so everyone is welcome! It is ideal for people trying improvisation for the first time, or more experienced players who want to work on core skills. The atmosphere is accessible, fun and non-judgemental and you will find yourself doing things you never thought you could.
What will I get out of it?
Each week you will become more confident and relaxed onstage, taking more risks and feeling more creative and liberated. You will learn the attitudes and ideas that make improvisation work. You will also find these things translating into your everyday life. You will be more confident with people, more creative in your work and better able to respond to stress.

The best improv classes in London youll never learn so much or laugh so hard
At the heart of every performance is the scene, the building block on which all improv shows are created. There is no prescription for creating a successful scene. Some are long, some short, some touching and tender, some daft and knockabout. Each week this class will examine techniques for making great improvised scenes, including approaches to character, space work and mime, game of the scene, narrative techniques, emotion and authenticity. A new tool in your tool box every week, leading to emotionally grounded, rewarding and hilarious scenes which are simple to play!
